Disney Illuminations: the nighttime show that no longer exists

The former evening show at Disneyland Park, performed on the castle from 2017 to 2025 and since replaced by Disney Tales of Magic. Its history, numbers, scenes, and my take.

What was Disney Illuminations?

Disney Illuminations was the nighttime show at Disneyland Park, projected onto Sleeping Beauty Castle every evening at closing time. It ran about 20 minutes and cast Mickey as master of ceremonies, traveling from one great Disney movie to the next.

Behind it was Walt Disney Creative Entertainment, with Katy Harris as director. Its opening music in particular borrowed from Ignite The Dream, which plays at night at Shanghai Disneyland.

The idea was simple: a big sound and light show mixing castle projections, water jets, lasers, fireworks, and a soundtrack that was often in French. It wrapped up the day right after the park closed.

Its history, from 2017 to 2025

Disney Illuminations actually lived twice. It first ran from 2017 to 2023, then returned from 2024 until early 2025. Below is the complete timeline, and along the way it sorts out a minor date confusion that gets repeated a lot online.

The show by the numbers

20 min Approximate length
10 Scenes (2017 version)
48 Disney characters
13 Songs

Technically, the show combined castle video mapping and projection with water fountains, lasers, pyrotechnics (both fireworks and flame cannons), LED lighting, and a polished score. Each scene was synchronized with precision, one after another.

How the show unfolded, and the Disney worlds it visited

The thread running through the show was Mickey’s journey across the great Disney movies, from the classics to more recent films. Along the way, it moved through these worlds in particular:

  • The Lion King, with Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight
  • The Little Mermaid (Part of Your World)
  • Finding Nemo (underwater sequence)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean (He’s a Pirate, with fire and flames)
  • Beauty and the Beast (live-action version, cut in 2024)
  • Star Wars (The Force Awakens)
  • Frozen (Let It Go and reprises)

The show opened with a quote inviting you to dream and closed with a fireworks finale that brought the characters together, set to A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes (Cinderella).

The 2024 comeback and what changed

The May 31, 2024, return wasn’t just a rerun. The version that came back was about a third shorter than the 2017 one. Two cuts stand out:

  • The Beauty and the Beast scene (live-action version) was removed.
  • One of the three Frozen sequences was dropped.

There was never any official explanation for this comeback. The most likely theory: keeping a strong nighttime show running between the end of Disney Dreams! (back for the 30th anniversary) and the arrival of a brand-new show. That’s exactly what happened with Disney Tales of Magic in early 2025.

My verdict on Disney Illuminations

I have fond memories of Disney Illuminations. It was a beautiful sound and light show, where the projections, water jets, fireworks, and music (often in French) worked really well together, and every time it took me back to a specific movie from my childhood.

My one criticism, and for me it’s what set it apart from something like Disney Dreams!, is that it leaned a little too hard on big blockbuster franchises at the expense of a real storyline and emotion. Mickey hopped from one world to the next without a very clear thread.

Compared with the original, the 2024 version also ran shorter. It remained a pleasant way to close out a day at the park, though the trimming was noticeable.

What replaced Disney Illuminations?

Disneyland Park’s nighttime show is now Disney Tales of Magic, in place since January 10, 2025. The concept is the same, a large-scale show projected on the castle, but the technology is newer: drones, projections that for the first time spill onto the facades along Main Street U.S.A., and a new score.

Here’s the full lineup of castle nighttime shows in order: first Disney Dreams!, followed by Disney Illuminations (2017-2023), a second run of Disney Dreams! for the 30th anniversary, a return of Disney Illuminations (2024-2025), and now Disney Tales of Magic.
