What was Disney Illuminations?
Disney Illuminations was the night-time show at Disneyland Park, projected every evening at closing time onto Sleeping Beauty Castle. It lasted around 20 minutes and had Mickey as master of ceremonies, travelling from one great Disney film to the next.
The show was designed by Walt Disney Creative Entertainment and directed by Katy Harris. It drew on Ignite The Dream, the night-time show at Shanghai Disneyland, especially for its opening music.
The idea was simple: a big sound and light show combining projections on the castle, water jets, lasers, fireworks and a soundtrack often in French. It closed the day just after the park closed.
Its history, from 2017 to 2025
Disney Illuminations had two lives. A first run from 2017 to 2023, then a comeback from 2024 to early 2025. Here is the full timeline, which also clears up a small mix-up over dates that is often repeated online.
Official opening
The show joins the daily programme for the 25th anniversary of Disneyland Park.
Covid suspension
The show stops when the parks close, then comes back in fits and starts (a brief return from late 2021 to early 2022).
Back every night for the 30th anniversary
Illuminations returns every evening for the first year of the 30th anniversary, preceded by the Disney D-Light drone pre-show.
Last show of the first run
Disney Dreams! takes over again on 12 April 2023 for the park’s 30th anniversary.
Comeback
Disney Illuminations returns in a version cut by about a third.
Final performance
Disney Illuminations ends for good.
The show in numbers
On the technical side, Disney Illuminations relied on video projection and mapping on the castle, lasers, water jets, pyrotechnics (fireworks and flame cannons), LEDs and a carefully crafted soundtrack. Everything was timed to perfection, scene after scene.
The running order and the Disney worlds it visited
The thread of the show was Mickey’s journey through the great Disney films, from the classics to more recent ones. Along the way, it moved through these worlds in particular:
- The Lion King (Circle of Life, Can You Feel the Love Tonight)
- The Little Mermaid (Part of Your World)
- Finding Nemo (underwater sequence)
- Pirates of the Caribbean (He’s a Pirate, with fire and flames)
- Beauty and the Beast (live-action version, removed in 2024)
- Star Wars (The Force Awakens)
- Frozen (Let It Go and reprises)
The show opened with a quote inviting you to dream and closed with a pyrotechnic finale bringing the characters together, set to A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes (Cinderella).
The 2024 comeback and what changed
The return on 31 May 2024 was not just a straight revival. The version that came back was about a third shorter than the 2017 one. Two cuts stood out:
- The Beauty and the Beast scene (live-action version) was removed.
- One of the three Frozen sequences was cut.
This comeback was never officially explained. The most likely theory: keeping a good night-time show running between the end of Disney Dreams! (back for the 30th anniversary) and the arrival of a brand new show. That is exactly what happened with Disney Tales of Magic in early 2025.
My verdict on Disney Illuminations
I have fond memories of Disney Illuminations. It was a really beautiful sound and light show, with projections, water jets, fireworks and music (often in French) working well together, and each scene took me back to a particular film from my childhood.
My only criticism, and for me it’s what set it apart from Disney Dreams!, is that it leaned a little too heavily on big hit franchises, at the expense of a real storyline and emotion. Mickey jumped from one world to the next without a very clear thread.
The version that came back in 2024 was also shorter than the original. It was still a lovely way to end a day in the park, but you could feel the cuts.
What replaced Disney Illuminations?
Since 10 January 2025, the night-time show at Disneyland Park has been Disney Tales of Magic. It keeps the idea of a big show projected onto the castle, but with newer technology: drones, projections that reach the facades of Main Street U.S.A. for the first time and a new soundtrack.
To place it in the line of castle night-time shows, in order: Disney Dreams!, then Disney Illuminations (2017-2023), Disney Dreams! again for the 30th anniversary, Disney Illuminations once more (2024-2025) and finally Disney Tales of Magic.
