What was Disney Dreams?
Disney Dreams! was the nighttime show at Disneyland Park, projected onto Sleeping Beauty Castle. It lasted about 20 minutes and played at park closing.
It was created by Steve Davison of Disney Live Entertainment, who was already behind World of Color in California. The show was designed for the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris and debuted on April 1, 2012 (with a preview on March 31, 2012).
What set it apart was its full range of effects: video projection (mapping) on the castle facade, water jets, lasers, pyrotechnics (fireworks and flame cannons), LEDs built into the turrets, and a carefully crafted soundtrack. It was all timed to a single storyline that reached beyond the castle facade itself.
The story the show told
Many nighttime shows simply string scenes together with no real connection. Disney Dreams! was different: it had an actual plot, and that storyline is what earned it its reputation.
The opening saw Peter Pan’s shadow slip away from him and reach for the second star to the right, a gesture that unleashed the magic across the castle. From there, the shadow hopped from film to film, wandering through Disney’s great tales.
Captain Hook put an end to its adventure by catching it. Peter Pan flew to its rescue and, helped by Tinker Bell, set the magic right again for the show’s ending.
That choice (letting a shadow lead viewers through the stories) made the show feel more emotional and more carefully structured than most nighttime shows at the park.

What made the show so strong was how every technique (mapping, fountains, lasers, pyrotechnics, the LED-lit turrets, and the score) was locked to one storyline.

The 2023 comeback for the 30th anniversary
Disney Dreams! returned on April 12, 2023, six years after its last show, and stayed for one season as part of the 30th anniversary Grand Finale. During that time, it stood in for Disney Illuminations.
The castle itself had changed in the meantime, and the show made the most of it. LEDs now lined the turrets and pulsed along with the action, while the projection and sound equipment had been upgraded since 2017. Everything looked crisper and hit harder.
The storyline, though, stayed close to the 2012 version. A few scenes could have used an update with more recent movies, but the original story still worked just as well.
My verdict
To me, Disney Dreams! is the most polished and most moving nighttime show the park has ever offered. Its strength came down to one simple thing: it told a story. Peter Pan’s shadow gave it a thread, a progression, a beginning, and an end. Most other nighttime shows string scenes together, but here you followed a character.
The storytelling was well built, with smooth transitions and scenes designed specifically for the show. The song choices helped a lot: well-known tunes everyone can connect with, plus a few bold choices that paid off, like the Hunchback of Notre Dame scene.
I do have a few honest reservations. The opening dragged a bit, and the mapping sometimes lacked precision in certain one-off scenes. Nothing that spoiled the whole thing. I really enjoyed seeing it again in 2023, and it’s a show that left a lasting impression on me.
What replaced it
To keep things straight, here’s the sequence of nighttime shows performed on Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Disney Dreams! first gave way to Disney Illuminations on March 26, 2017, a show created for the 25th anniversary. Disney Dreams! then came back for the 30th anniversary Grand Finale, from April 12, 2023, to May 30, 2024. On May 31, 2024, Disney Illuminations returned to the schedule.
Since January 10, 2025, Disney Tales of Magic has been the show on the castle. So that’s the show, not Disney Dreams!, you’ll see on your visit today. To see all of today’s nighttime shows, check out the guide to the nighttime shows or the shows hub.

02 What was Disney Dreams?

03 When did Disney Dreams start and end?
Its official opening was April 1, 2012 (after a preview on March 31, 2012), to mark the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris. The first run wrapped up on March 24, 2017. It returned on April 12, 2023, for the Grand Finale of the 30th anniversary, and its final performance was on May 30, 2024.
04 Will Disney Dreams ever return?

05 What’s the difference between Disney Dreams and Disney Illuminations?
Disney Dreams! told a real story, following Peter Pan’s shadow as it traveled from film to film. Disney Illuminations, on the other hand, strung together scenes from various franchises and well-known songs, with no single storyline. That’s why many visitors found Disney Dreams! more moving.
