What was Disney Dreams?
Disney Dreams! was the night-time show at Disneyland Park, projected onto Sleeping Beauty Castle. It lasted about 20 minutes and was performed at park closing.
It was created by Steve Davison of Disney Live Entertainment, the man already behind World of Color in California. The show was made for the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris and launched on 1 April 2012 (with a preview on 31 March 2012).
What set it apart was its full range of technology: video projection (mapping) on the castle’s facade, water jets, lasers, pyrotechnics (fireworks and flame cannons), LEDs built into the turrets and a carefully crafted soundtrack. All of it was synchronised to a single storyline that went well beyond the castle facade alone.
The story the show told
Unlike many night-time shows that string scenes together with no link between them, Disney Dreams! followed a real story. That narrative thread is what made its name.
It all began with Peter Pan’s shadow, which broke free from his body and touched the second star to the right. This released the magic over the castle. The shadow then travelled from film to film, through the great Disney stories.
Its escapade was cut short by Captain Hook, who captured it. Peter Pan came to the rescue and, with Tinker Bell’s help, put the magic back in its place to close the show.
This approach (a shadow guiding the audience through the stories) gave the show a more moving and better structured feel than most of the park’s night-time shows.

Synchronising all these effects (mapping, water jets, lasers, pyrotechnics, turret LEDs and soundtrack) to one storyline was the show’s great strength.

The 2023 comeback for the 30th anniversary
Six years after it ended, Disney Dreams! came back on 12 April 2023 for the Grand Finale of the 30th anniversary, for one season. It temporarily replaced Disney Illuminations.
This return made the most of the castle’s technical upgrades. The turrets had been fitted with LEDs that lit up in time with the show, and the projectors and sound system had been modernised since 2017. The result was sharper and more intense.
The storyline itself stayed close to the 2012 version. A few scenes would have deserved an update with more recent films, but the original story still worked just as well.
My verdict
For me, Disney Dreams! is the most accomplished and most moving night-time show the park has ever put on. Its strength came down to one very simple thing: it told a story. Peter Pan’s shadow gave it a thread, a sense of progression, a beginning and an end. Most other night-time shows string scenes together, but here you followed a character.
The storytelling was well built, with polished transitions and scenes designed specially for the show. The choice of music helped a lot: well-known songs that speak to everyone and a few bold choices that paid off, such as the Hunchback of Notre Dame scene.
I do have a few honest reservations. The opening dragged on a little, and the mapping sometimes lacked precision in certain one-off scenes. Nothing that spoilt the whole. I really enjoyed seeing it again in 2023 and it’s a show I remember vividly.
What replaced it
To help you keep track, here is the sequence of night-time shows performed on Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Disney Dreams! first made way for Disney Illuminations on 26 March 2017, created for the 25th anniversary. Disney Dreams! then came back for the Grand Finale of the 30th anniversary, from 12 April 2023 to 30 May 2024. On 31 May 2024, Disney Illuminations returned to the programme.
Since 10 January 2025, Disney Tales of Magic has been performed on the castle. So that is the show, not Disney Dreams!, that you will see on your visit today. To see all the current night-time shows, take a look at the guide to the night-time shows or the shows hub.
