How to get Magic Shots at Disneyland Paris

A PhotoPass photographer snaps your picture, and a Disney character or a special effect shows up on the image afterward. Here’s how to ask for a Disneyland Paris Magic Shot, where to find one in the parks, and what you need to take it home.

A Magic Shot is a picture taken by one of the park’s PhotoPass photographers, with a Disney character or an effect added by computer once the shot is done.

In the moment, you just pose as usual, often with a specific gesture (an outstretched hand, eyes looking up). The character or effect isn’t actually in front of you: it gets added later. You see how it turned out once the photo shows up in your PhotoPass account.

That’s what sets a Magic Shot apart from a regular photo. Tinker Bell resting in your palm, a pumpkin, a witch’s cauldron, balloons floating away: the effect depends on the location and the time of year. Your phone can’t recreate it, since Disney’s teams add it in post-production.

How do you get a Magic Shot?

It all comes down to one thing: you have to ask the photographer. Not every photo spot offers a Magic Shot, and the ones that do change from day to day. So make a habit of asking every photographer you pass.

Step 1

Find the photographer

Keep an eye out for a PhotoPass photographer: beige shirt with the PhotoPass logo, big camera in hand, usually posted beside a famous backdrop or a photo spot and often shaded by a parasol.

Step 2

Look for the Magic Shot sign

Spot the little Magic Shot board. Wherever this option exists, a small sign gives you a sneak peek of the effect that spot adds.

Step 3

Ask for the Magic Shot

Ask the photographer if they offer a Magic Shot. That’s the key question. If one is available, they’ll let you know.

Step 4

Strike the pose

Do the pose they show you. The gesture matters: it’s how the character or effect ends up in the right place in the photo.

Step 5

Get your photo

Pick up the photo later in the Disneyland Paris app or in your online account. That’s when the effect appears, not before.

Where are the Magic Shot spots in the parks?

You’ll find PhotoPass photographers all over both parks: facing the castle, on Central Plaza (the big square at the entrance to Disneyland Park), close to the headline rides, and at some character meet and greets. Which of them do Magic Shots, however, changes with the weekday and the season.

For the most reliable info, open the official Disneyland Paris app on the day you go. Its interactive map flags the photo spots currently running with a little camera icon. The app doesn’t always list every single Magic Shot, so stay alert while you walk around and ask the photographers.

Which characters and effects might you get?

First thing to know: you don’t get to pick the character. Magic Shots often vary by location, day, and season. You’ll land on whichever character or effect is available, with no guarantee of getting the one you were hoping for. Think of it as a nice surprise rather than a checklist.

Here are some examples that have shown up in the parks, just to give you an idea. They aren’t all offered at once, and some come back mostly during the seasonal events.

  • On Central Plaza, the big square at the entrance to Disneyland Park: balloon effects or seasonal backdrops.
  • Over in Adventureland, the jungle and pirate area: characters like Kaa, Peter Pan, or the Lion King gang.
  • Over in Discoveryland, the futuristic area: characters from the Zootopia or Star Wars worlds.
  • During Halloween: a pumpkin, a witch’s cauldron, orange and purple color schemes.
  • During Christmas: characters in their holiday outfits.

If you really want to be pictured with a character you may not actually run into, a Magic Shot is a good option, on top of the character meet and greets. You don’t meet them in person, but you still leave with a photo by their side.

The Animated Magic Shot: a version that moves

Along with still photos, Disneyland Paris offers Animated Magic Shots: instead of a picture, you get a short video where the effect comes to life. It works the same way as a regular Magic Shot. You pose for the photographer, and the effect is added afterward.

What’s on offer changes here too, exactly as with the still shots, and new seasonal editions turn up over the course of the year. To find out if an animated spot is up and running when you visit, ask a photographer or look in the app.

What you need before you can take a Magic Shot home

Good news: there’s no extra charge for a Magic Shot. It’s included in your PhotoPass or PhotoPass+ plan, so you don’t pay more for each effect. That said, you still need that plan to download the photo in high quality and use it however you like.

There are two ways to go. You can buy the plan ahead of your photo. Or the photographer gives you a temporary card to attach to your account, and you make up your mind about buying later on. Whichever you choose, the Magic Shots sit right alongside all your other PhotoPass pictures.

For the details on the plans, their prices, and how they work, everything is covered in the dedicated article: PhotoPass and PhotoPass+. Magic Shots are one of the services available in the parks.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do you get a Magic Shot at Disneyland Paris?

Ask a PhotoPass photographer in the park. Magic Shots aren’t available at every photo spot, and what’s offered varies by day. Look for a photographer in a beige T-shirt with the PhotoPass logo and the little Magic Shot sign, check whether one is available at that location, hold the pose you’re shown, then pick up the photo in your PhotoPass account. You’ll only see the effect once the photo has been uploaded.

02 Do Magic Shots cost extra?

No, the Magic Shot isn’t billed on top. It’s included with your Disney PhotoPass or PhotoPass+ package, with no extra charge per effect. You just need a package to download the photo in high quality. You’ll find all the prices in the article on Disney PhotoPass and PhotoPass+.

03 Do you need a PhotoPass for a Magic Shot?

Yes. To download your Magic Shots and keep them at full quality, a Disney PhotoPass or PhotoPass+ is required. Either buy a package ahead of your session, or take a temporary card from the photographer and make up your mind afterward. The article on Disney PhotoPass and PhotoPass+ walks through every package.

04 Can you choose the character in your Magic Shot?

No. Magic Shots change depending on the location, the day, and the season. There’s no way to guarantee a specific character. Think of it as a nice surprise. To find out what’s available during your trip, check the app on the day itself.

05 What is an Animated Magic Shot?

It’s the animated version of the Magic Shot. Instead of a still photo, you get a short video where the effect comes to life. It works the same way: you pose for the photographer, and the effect gets added afterward. Availability varies by day and season.

06 Magic Shot vs. ride photo: what’s the difference?

No. A Magic Shot is a picture taken by a PhotoPass photographer in the park, with a character or Disney effect added afterward (Tinker Bell sitting in your hand, for example). A ride photo is snapped automatically during certain thrill rides. They’re two separate things, but you can get both with PhotoPass.
