Disneyland Paris Magic Shots: how to get them

A photographer takes your picture, then a Disney character or an effect appears on the image. Here’s how to ask for a Disneyland Paris Magic Shot, where to find one in the parks and what you need to take it home.

A Magic Shot is a photo taken by one of the park’s PhotoPass photographers, with a Disney character or an effect added by computer after the shot.

At the time, you pose as normal, often with a specific gesture (hand held out, looking up). The character or effect isn’t actually there in front of you: it’s added afterwards. You see the result once the photo reaches your PhotoPass account.

That’s what sets a Magic Shot apart from a standard photo. Tinker Bell sitting in your hand, a pumpkin, a witch’s cauldron, balloons floating away: the effect depends on the spot and the time of year. You can’t recreate it with your phone, as Disney’s teams add it in post-production.

How to get a Magic Shot

It’s simple: you have to ask the photographer. Not every photo spot offers a Magic Shot, and the ones that do change from day to day. So get into the habit of asking every photographer you come across.

Step 1

Spot the photographer

Look out for a PhotoPass photographer. They wear a beige T-shirt with the PhotoPass logo, carry a big camera and stand near a well-known backdrop or photo spot, often under a parasol.

Step 2

Look for the Magic Shot sign

Look for the small Magic Shot sign. At the spots that offer one, a little sign shows a preview of the effect added at that location.

Step 3

Ask for the Magic Shot

Ask the photographer whether they offer a Magic Shot. That’s the key question. If one is available, they’ll tell you.

Step 4

Strike the pose

Strike the pose they show you. The gesture matters: it’s used to place the character or effect in the right spot on the photo.

Step 5

Get your photo

Collect the photo later, in the Disneyland Paris app or in your online account. The effect appears at that point, not before.

Where can you find Magic Shots in the parks?

PhotoPass photographers are spread across both parks: in front of the castle, on Central Plaza (the big square by the entrance to Disneyland Park), near the headline rides and at some character meet and greets. The spots that offer a Magic Shot rotate with the day of the week and the season.

The most reliable way is to check the official Disneyland Paris app on the day of your visit. Its interactive map shows the active photo spots, marked with a camera icon. Not every Magic Shot is always listed in the app, so keep your eyes open and ask the photographers.

Which characters and effects can you hope for?

First thing to know: you don’t choose the character. Magic Shots often change with the spot, the day and the season. You’ll get whichever character or effect is on offer, with no guarantee it’s the one you were hoping for. See it as a nice surprise, not a checklist.

Here are a few examples already spotted in the parks, to give you an idea. They’re not all available at the same time, and some mainly come back for the seasonal events.

  • On Central Plaza, the big square by the entrance to Disneyland Park: balloon effects or seasonal scenery.
  • Over in Adventureland, the land of jungles and pirates: characters such as Kaa, Peter Pan or the Lion King gang.
  • Over in Discoveryland, the futuristic land: characters from the world of Zootropolis or Star Wars.
  • During Halloween: pumpkins, a witch’s cauldron, orange and purple themes.
  • At Christmas, characters in festive outfits.

If you’re keen to appear with a character you won’t necessarily meet in real life, a Magic Shot is a good option, on top of the character meet and greets. You don’t meet them in the flesh, but you still go home with a photo by their side.

The Animated Magic Shot, the moving version

As well as still photos, Disneyland Paris offers Animated Magic Shots: instead of an image, you get a short video where the effect comes to life. It works just like a standard Magic Shot. You pose in front of the photographer, and the effect is added afterwards.

Availability varies, as with still Magic Shots, and seasonal versions pop up throughout the year. Ask the photographer or check the app to find out whether an animated spot is running on the day of your visit.

What you need before taking a Magic Shot home

Good news: a Magic Shot doesn’t cost extra. It’s included in your PhotoPass or PhotoPass+ package, so you don’t pay a supplement for each effect. You do still need that package to download the photo in good quality and use it freely.

There are two options. Either you buy your package before the photo session. Or the photographer gives you a temporary card that you link to your account, so you can decide later whether to buy your photos. Either way, your Magic Shots end up in the same place as your other PhotoPass photos.

For the details of the packages, their prices and how they work, everything is explained in the dedicated article: PhotoPass and PhotoPass+. The Magic Shot is one of the services available in the parks.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do you get a Magic Shot at Disneyland Paris?

You have to ask a PhotoPass photographer on site. Not every photo spot offers them, and what’s available changes from day to day. Look for their beige T-shirt with the PhotoPass logo and the small Magic Shot sign, ask if they have one at that spot, strike the pose you’re shown, then collect the photo in your PhotoPass account. The effect only appears once the photo is online.

02 Do Magic Shots cost extra?

No, Magic Shots aren’t charged on top. They’re included in your PhotoPass or PhotoPass+ package, with no extra cost per effect. You simply need a package to download the photo in high quality. Prices are explained in my article on PhotoPass and PhotoPass+.

03 Do you need a PhotoPass for a Magic Shot?

Yes. You need a PhotoPass or PhotoPass+ to download and keep your Magic Shots in high quality. You can buy your package before the photo session, or get a temporary card from the photographer and decide later. The packages are explained in my article on PhotoPass and PhotoPass+.

04 Can you choose the character in your Magic Shot?

No. Magic Shots change with the location, the day and the season. You can’t be sure of getting a particular character. Think of it as a nice surprise. To see what’s on offer during your trip, check the app on the day.

05 What is an Animated Magic Shot?

It’s the animated version of the Magic Shot. Instead of a still photo, you get a short video in which the effect comes to life. It works the same way: you pose in front of the photographer and the effect is added afterwards. Availability varies with the day and the season.

06 Is a Magic Shot the same thing as a ride photo?

No. A Magic Shot is a photo taken by a PhotoPass photographer in the park, with a Disney character or effect added afterwards (Tinker Bell in your hand, for example). A ride photo, on the other hand, is taken automatically during some thrill rides. They’re two different things, but you can get both with PhotoPass.
