At a glance

Restaurant Hakuna Matata is a quick-service restaurant in Adventureland, in Disneyland Park, close to Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin. The building opened in 1992 as Aux Épices Enchantées, then got a new theme and the name Hakuna Matata in 1995, following the success of the movie The Lion King (1994).

From the outside, you see a squat African hut with mud-and-straw walls covered in bright geometric designs, under a thatched roof, and a granary leaning against the facade. Inside, Place Pumbaa and Terrasse Timon are two dining rooms that open onto each other, and each one sets its own mood: African masks hanging on the walls, rock-art paintings, clay pots, light fixtures made of branches, hanging vines, tropical greenery, and murals starring Timon and Pumbaa. Outside, a big terrace in the shade overlooks the land while music from The Lion King plays.

The food takes its cue from Africa, with very lightly spiced dishes like chicken yassa, plantains, and corn fries. You can use Mobile Order through the mobile app. By the way, the phrase "hakuna matata" comes from Swahili and means "no worries."

History

Opened in 1995, Restaurant Hakuna Matata sits where Aux Épices Enchantées used to be, a restaurant there since April 12, 1992.

After The Lion King came out worldwide in 1994, Disneyland Paris chose to rename the restaurant and add elements from the animated movie to the African architecture that was already in place. The main structure, with its thatched roof, stayed exactly the same.

My verdict

Restaurant Hakuna Matata is an Adventureland counter-service spot themed around The Lion King, serving African food you won’t find anywhere else in the park. Its strength is that out-of-the-ordinary menu, served in a richly crafted setting.

I’ve eaten here several times, and the pretty mural inside sets the mood right away. Plan on around €16 per adult and €10 per child at this spot, open since 1995, with several dining rooms, shaded terraces, and Mobile Order. I really recommend the sweet potato fries, and the chicken yassa makes a nice change. The flavors are a little spicy, and the line can get long at lunchtime.

I recommend it for anyone curious about African food and for families who want something other than burgers. It’s less of a fit if you’re wary of food with a bit of a kick.

Map & getting there

Restaurant Hakuna Matata is in Adventureland, between the Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin attraction and Colonel Hathi’s Outpost Restaurant.

Your questions about this restaurant

01 Where can you find cheap eats in the Disneyland Paris parks?

To keep costs down, stick to the quick-service counters rated €. Casey’s Corner serves hot dogs on Main Street, Café Hyperion offers burgers and nuggets in Discoveryland, Colonel Hathi’s Pizza Outpost has pizza by the slice in Adventureland, and Cowboy Cookout Barbecue in Frontierland is still a good deal. Over at Disney Adventure World, Stark Factory and Super Diner remain affordable. Tip: Mobile Order in the app also lets you order at some counters without waiting in line. And for a little snack, a waffle, churros, or ice cream for €5-10 hits the spot.

02 Do Disney restaurants have kids’ menus?

Yes, nearly every Disneyland Paris restaurant has a child price (ages 3-11). At the all-you-can-eat buffets, kids pay about half price: €25 at Agrabah Café, €25 at Cape Cod, €20 at La Cantina. Classic table-service restaurants also have a kids’ menu with a kid-friendly appetizer, main course, and dessert. At the quick-service counters, you’ll find kids’ menus that include a drink and a dessert. You can ask for a high chair when you book, using the "special request" field.

03 Are there vegetarian and vegan options at Disneyland Paris restaurants?

Yes, a growing number of Disneyland Paris restaurants have vegetarian and vegan choices. In Frontierland, Lucky Nugget Saloon offers an entirely vegan menu, and over in Fantasyland, Toad Hall Restaurant serves breaded plant-based crispy bites that are very good. Most of the other table-service restaurants and buffets list at least one vegetarian dish. Simple buffets such as Agrabah Café or Cape Cod have meatless options too. For the full picture, get my free file by email, which gathers the menus of every Disneyland Paris restaurant: you can check the veggie options ahead of your visit.

04 Where should you go for an afternoon treat or a small bite in the parks?

The parks are packed with kiosks and snack stands for when hunger strikes. On the sweet side, there’s Cookie Kitchen on Main Street U.S.A., March Hare Refreshments in Fantasyland, waffle and churro stands all over, and roaming popcorn and ice cream carts. On the savory side, the hot dogs at Casey’s Corner. Plan on €5-10 per snack. Quick tip: some stands sell reusable collectible popcorn buckets that make fun souvenirs and get you discounted refills all day long.

05 What is Mobile Order at Disneyland Paris restaurants, and where can I use it?

Mobile Order lets you order your meal ahead in the official Disneyland Paris mobile app and pick it up at the time you choose, without waiting in line. You sign in to the app, pick the restaurant and the time slot, choose your dishes, pay online (your annual pass discount code works), and get your pickup voucher by email. The 8 participating restaurants are: Au Chalet de la Marionnette (Fantasyland), Café Hyperion (Discoveryland), Casa de Coco (Frontierland), Casey’s Corner (Main Street), Cowboy Cookout Barbecue (Frontierland), Hakuna Matata (Adventureland), Last Chance Cafe (Frontierland), and The Hollywood Gardens Restaurant (World Premiere in Disney Adventure World). The service is free, but you can only order for the same day.
