At a glance

Phantom Manor is a dark ride perched at the top of a hill overlooking Frontierland. Housed in a large, run-down-looking mansion, it invites guests to discover the tragic story of Melanie Ravenswood, a bride whose suitors all vanished without a trace. The experience starts on foot in an elevator that seems to stretch, then carries on aboard small dark vehicles that move automatically through the rooms of the manor.

During the ride, guests travel through immersive scenes like a ballroom where spirits dance or a boudoir where the bride grieves. This dark ride uses plenty of special effects and animated figures to tell its tale. The mood is dark and mysterious, with an orchestral score playing over each scene to make the place feel even more unsettling.

The adventure ends with a trip into a phantom canyon where you meet the people of the town of Thunder Mesa, now turned into skeletons. It’s an iconic ride that puts atmosphere and storytelling ahead of pure speed, so you can enjoy all the rich details and visual illusions throughout the ten-minute tour.

Tony Baxter supervised the project, Imagineer Jeff Burke handled executive production for all of Frontierland, and author Craig Fleming helped shape the tale. The American versions play things for laughs, but Phantom Manor has its own original storyline, firmly tied to the Western theme of the park.

What sets it apart

The most polished dark ride at Disneyland Paris. An abandoned Western manor haunted by a crowd of ghosts, with optical illusions and apparitions following one another all along the ride. The attention paid to every detail of the sets rewards guests who take the time to look around.

02

History

Phantom Manor first opened its doors on April 12, 1992, the same day as the park. Of all the Haunted Mansions, this is the most sinister one, with sister rides at Disneyland Anaheim (1969), Orlando’s Magic Kingdom (1971), and Tokyo Disneyland (1983).

A major refurbishment, carried out from January 2018 to May 2019, made the storyline clearer and brought back several effects. The French narration went to Bernard Alane, while the original Vincent Price recordings were restored for the English version.

My verdict

Julie
Julie ★★★★★ 200+ visits since 2023

Phantom Manor is the most polished dark ride at Disneyland Paris and the darkest take on the Haunted Mansion: an abandoned Western manor haunted by 999 ghosts, with a carefully crafted story built around Melanie Ravenswood. The ride lasts 9 min 30 aboard Doombuggies, and Premier Access is available. Set at the top of the hill overlooking Frontierland, it’s the ride that sets this park apart most from the other Disney resorts.

Easily in my top 5 for Disneyland Park, and probably the dark ride with the richest storytelling. I suggest watching the official Disneyland Paris video on their YouTube channel, which walks through the whole story: it completely changes how you see the ride. On the practical side, it also gives you almost 10 minutes out of the rain, perfect on a wet day. The mood can scare little ones, but it’s not a ghost train full of jump scares, it’s more about the story than real fright.

Your questions about this ride

01 How can you avoid long lines for the most popular rides?

To skip long lines at Disneyland Paris, I mix several strategies. First, Single Rider is free and really speeds things up on the rides that offer it, including Crush’s Coaster, Flight Force, Ratatouille, and Spider-Man, as long as you don’t mind boarding apart from your group. Next, Disney Premier Access is a paid service that guarantees you priority entry on the headline rides. If you’re staying at a Disney hotel, Extra Magic Time lets you into the park before official opening, and that’s the best time to ride the popular attractions back to back without waiting. Last, heading to the busiest rides during a parade or a big show empties the lines dramatically.

02 Are the wait times posted in the park accurate?

Yes, the wait times shown in the app or on the park’s screens are generally accurate. They’re often equal to or slightly longer than the real wait, which helps you plan your day better.

03 How can I find out if a ride will be under refurbishment during my vacation?

Disneyland Paris posts the list of rides closed for refurbishment on its official website several weeks ahead of time. Since the parks are open year-round, maintenance crews sometimes work on days the park is open, which leads to temporary closures. My tip: check this calendar (or the one on my blog) before you book, especially if there’s one particular ride you really care about.

04 Which rides might scare young kids?

Several rides at Disneyland Paris can be a bit much for young kids, even with no height requirement. Blanche-Neige et les Sept Nains, in Fantasyland, has dark scenes with the witch that can catch them off guard. Les Voyages de Pinocchio also has some unsettling moments. La Tanière du Dragon, beneath Sleeping Beauty Castle, is home to a very impressive animatronic dragon. Phantom Manor, in Frontierland, leans into its ghostly mood and stays pretty intense for little ones. Pirates of the Caribbean switches between cheerful scenes and darker ones. I recommend watching how your child reacts before you board.

05 How far ahead does Disneyland Paris announce ride closures?

Disneyland Paris shares its list of ride closures about 2 to 3 months ahead. For major rides, the park lets guests know about planned construction at least two months before it starts. I recommend checking the official calendar (or my dedicated page) a few weeks before your visit, since dates can change. That way you won’t get the nasty surprise of finding out on the spot that your favorite ride is closed for refurbishment.
