At a glance

Here, you fight on the Rebel side in a space battle. While you wait in line, Admiral Ackbar gives the pilots their orders. Your MK-1212 train is covered in steampunk designs, gears, and stars, a wink at the Jules Verne theme the ride started with. A launcher built with help from Dassault Aviation engineers fires you into the Columbiad cannon at 1.8 G. From there, you speed through a fight over Jakku with TIE fighters and a Star Destroyer on your tail, while the London Symphony Orchestra plays music by John Williams.

On the technical side, it’s one of the most impressive Space Mountains in the world: 1,027 meters of track, 32 meters tall, speeds up to 75 km/h, three inversions (a sidewinder, a corkscrew, and a classic loop), and the only one in the Disney lineup with an outdoor section you can see during the launch.

Like most headline attractions, Hyperspace Mountain sometimes closes for several weeks for refurbishment. Before your visit, check the scheduled ride closures.

What sets it apart

The most intense coaster in Disneyland Park. An upside-down loop, a sudden launch, and a plunge into the void of space set to an orchestral Star Wars soundtrack. Single Rider often cuts the wait a lot on busy days.

History

The ride debuted on June 1, 1995, under the name Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune. Imagineer Tim Delaney created it, taking his cue from the Jules Verne novel. No other Space Mountain anywhere has both a catapult start and three inversions.

It was rethemed as Space Mountain: Mission 2 in April 2005, with a new storyline and soundtrack, then became Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain on May 7, 2017 for the park’s 25th anniversary. The theming was meant to be temporary at first but became permanent, with an orchestral soundtrack and projections tied to the Star Wars saga. For the park’s 30th anniversary in 2025, the exterior lighting was redone with more than 640 LED fixtures and 17 kilometers of cabling, turning every launch into a show you can see from all over Discoveryland.

Premier Access, Single Rider, PhotoPass

Premier Access

Skip the standby line whenever you like. Handy in peak season, when the wait often goes past 60 minutes.

Single Rider

A "single rider" line: you fill the empty seats, often much faster than the standby line.

PhotoPass

Photos taken automatically during the ride, which you pick up after you get off.

Extra Magic Time

Usually open during this early slot before the park opens to the public, mainly for Disney hotel guests and Disneyland Pass Gold holders. A good time to ride it with a shorter wait.

My verdict

Julie
Julie ★★★★☆ 200+ visits since 2023

Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is the most intense coaster in Disneyland Park: a 1.8 G launch, a top speed of 75 km/h, three inversions, and a ride through the whole dome to an orchestral Star Wars soundtrack. It’s the third life of the legendary Space Mountain that opened in 1995, renamed Hyperspace Mountain on May 7, 2017. Minimum height is 120 cm, and both Single Rider and Premier Access are available.

For thrills, it’s the park’s benchmark for coaster fans. My real tip is to go watch one or two launches from outside at night: the dome literally lights up with each shot, and it’s gorgeous. I know fans of the original Discoveryland spirit still mourn the Jules Verne theme, and I get it. If your kids are too short to ride, remember Rider Switch (formerly Baby Switch).

Your questions about this ride

01 How can you avoid long lines for the most popular rides?

To skip long lines at Disneyland Paris, I mix several strategies. First, Single Rider is free and really speeds things up on the rides that offer it, including Crush’s Coaster, Flight Force, Ratatouille, and Spider-Man, as long as you don’t mind boarding apart from your group. Next, Disney Premier Access is a paid service that guarantees you priority entry on the headline rides. If you’re staying at a Disney hotel, Extra Magic Time lets you into the park before official opening, and that’s the best time to ride the popular attractions back to back without waiting. Last, heading to the busiest rides during a parade or a big show empties the lines dramatically.

02 Are the wait times posted in the park accurate?

Yes, the wait times shown in the app or on the park’s screens are generally accurate. They’re often equal to or slightly longer than the real wait, which helps you plan your day better.

03 How can I find out if a ride will be under refurbishment during my vacation?

Disneyland Paris posts the list of rides closed for refurbishment on its official website several weeks ahead of time. Since the parks are open year-round, maintenance crews sometimes work on days the park is open, which leads to temporary closures. My tip: check this calendar (or the one on my blog) before you book, especially if there’s one particular ride you really care about.

04 What are the height requirements for each ride at Disneyland Paris?

Here are the minimum heights for the thrill rides at Disneyland Paris. In Disneyland Park: Autopia at 0.81 m, Star Tours and Big Thunder Mountain at 1.02 m, Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain at 1.20 m, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril at 1.40 m. In Disney Adventure World: Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop at 0.81 m, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at 1.02 m, Crush’s Coaster at 1.07 m, and Avengers Assemble: Flight Force and RC Racer at 1.20 m. All the other rides have no height requirement, which families with young kids love.

05 Which rides at Disneyland Paris feature loops or inversions?

At Disneyland Paris, three rides turn you upside down. In Avengers Campus, Avengers Assemble: Flight Force launches you through inversions on an indoor coaster in total darkness. Over in Discoveryland, Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is another indoor launched coaster with inversions, this time with a space theme. As for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, it has one loop, out in the open air. If big thrills are your thing, put these three at the top of your list. You need to be at least 1.20 m tall for the first two and 1.40 m for the third.
