At a glance

Thunder Mesa Mercantile Building is Frontierland’s main general store, opposite Big Thunder Mountain, in Disneyland Park.

From the outside, it stands out with three side-by-side facades, each with a different sign, giving the impression of three separate shops when it’s actually a single connected space. Each sign matches a type of customer in the fictional town of Thunder Mesa. Tobias Norton & Sons - Frontier Traders caters to trappers and takes its name from a character in the film Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, produced by Walt Disney in 1955. Bonanza Outfitters supplies the townspeople’s clothing: its name refers to a river that was busy during the gold rush, and to the American TV series Bonanza, broadcast on NBC from 1959 to 1973. Eureka Mining Supplies and Assay Office is aimed at miners and gold prospectors and bears the founding date 1852 on its facade: "Eureka" was the cry of prospectors on finding a nugget.

The architecture copies the mining towns of the nineteenth-century American West, the period in which the land is set, around the 1880s. Inside, the decor is rustic: solid wooden shelves, oil lamps, period display cases, miners’ tools, hunting trophies and artefacts recalling the conquest of the West. An old mine lift is even built into the decor: listen carefully, it sometimes lets out the sound of pickaxes, as if the shop were connected to the Big Thunder Mountain mine.

The range is wide: Disney PhotoPass+, food, drinks, adult and children’s clothing, accessories, pins, figurines, Disney ears, art items, toys, soft toys and homeware.

What makes it stand out

Three shops in one western store. The outside shows three separate shopfronts for three fictional businesses in the mining town of Thunder Mesa: Tobias Norton & Sons for trappers, Bonanza Outfitters for clothing and Eureka Mining Supplies for gold prospectors. Inside, the connected rooms are filled with miners’ tools, hunting trophies and artefacts recalling the conquest of the West in the 1880s.

History

The shop opened on 12 April 1992 along with Disneyland Park. A little-known fact: the building was already standing while the park was being built, and it was used to sell souvenirs to the workers and the construction team.

My verdict

My favourite shop in the park, hands down. And not just because it faces Big Thunder Mountain, my favourite ride: each of the three shopfronts tells its own story, and the interior decor is incredibly dense. You could be in the general store of a real mining town.

I stop here every time I’m in Frontierland, and there’s always a detail I hadn’t noticed before. It’s also one of the best-stocked shops in the park: if you only have time for one in Frontierland, make it this one.

Your questions about this shop

01 Where can you shop for Disney merchandise at Disneyland Paris?

You have four main options: the shops in Disneyland Park (mainly on Main Street U.S.A. and in each land), the shops in Disney Adventure World, the shops in Disney Village (no park ticket needed) and your hotel shop if you’re staying at an official Disney Hotel. I go through the main shops in my dedicated article.

02 Can you shop without carrying your bags all day?

Yes. The Shopping Service lets you have your purchases sent to a collection point, to pick up later in the shop, or as you leave the park in another shop, or even in the shop at your Disney Hotel. The service is free in most shops (above a minimum spend). Just ask the sales assistant when you pay.

03 What are the shops’ opening hours?

The shops in the parks roughly follow the parks’ opening hours, often opening a little earlier on Main Street U.S.A. and closing a little later after the night-time show. The Disney Village shops have their own opening hours, usually later into the evening. The exact times are in the Disneyland Paris app.

04 Can you order Disneyland Paris merchandise online?

There’s no official Disneyland Paris online shop. To buy from home, you can go to the Disney Store website (formerly shopDisney), which sells official Disney merchandise and sometimes a few Disneyland Paris-specific products. At the resort, you buy directly in the shops.
