At a glance

Dapper Dan’s Hair Cuts is a real, working hair salon and barber shop, at number 1428 Flower Street, on Main Street U.S.A. Designed by Imagineer Eddie Sotto, it recreates an American barber shop from the turn of the twentieth century. The gold leaf on the windows uses a technique practised by Eddie Sotto’s grandfather, a gilder.

The beige facade copies that of its Florida counterpart at Magic Kingdom (1971), with an American flag, a twisted red and white barber’s pole and gold-leaf lettering on the windows.

Inside is a faithful recreation of an early twentieth-century American salon: a black and white chequerboard tiled floor typical of the years before 1920, burgundy Victorian-pattern wallpaper hand screen-printed by Bradbury & Bradbury Art Wallpapers, dark panelling framing three mirrors, cabinets with compartments filled with shaving mugs from before 1910, an antique stove, a marble washbasin, a fan with exposed wiring and a party-line telephone playing a comic sketch. The antique mugs recall the days when each customer left their own at the salon between visits.

The centrepiece is two buttoned burgundy leather chairs by the Theo. A. Kochs Company of Chicago, alongside a late nineteenth-century The Globe steam towel warmer by the Chrisholm Company of New York, found by chance by prop designer Bethan Brody in a restaurant where she was sheltering from a storm.

Services include adult and children’s haircuts, traditional shaves and beard trims, as well as alum stone, eau de Cologne and shaving soap with a bowl for sale.

What makes it stand out

A real working barber shop since 1992. Old-school haircuts and traditional shaves, with a hot towel, shaving brush and shaving soap, in an American barber shop setting from the turn of the twentieth century, recreated right down to the antique shaving mugs: in the old days, each customer left his own at the barber’s between visits.

History

Opened on 12 April 1992 as Harmony Barber Shop, the salon was renamed Dapper Dan’s Hair Cuts in the mid-1990s, a nod to the Dapper Dans vocal quartet formed in 1959 at the original Disneyland. The mirror on the facade still discreetly bears the old Harmony name. Paris and Magic Kingdom, in Florida, are the only two Disney parks with a working barber shop.

Your questions about this shop

01 Where can you shop for Disney merchandise at Disneyland Paris?

You have four main options: the shops in Disneyland Park (mainly on Main Street U.S.A. and in each land), the shops in Disney Adventure World, the shops in Disney Village (no park ticket needed) and your hotel shop if you’re staying at an official Disney Hotel. I go through the main shops in my dedicated article.

02 Can you shop without carrying your bags all day?

Yes. The Shopping Service lets you have your purchases sent to a collection point, to pick up later in the shop, or as you leave the park in another shop, or even in the shop at your Disney Hotel. The service is free in most shops (above a minimum spend). Just ask the sales assistant when you pay.

03 What are the shops’ opening hours?

The shops in the parks roughly follow the parks’ opening hours, often opening a little earlier on Main Street U.S.A. and closing a little later after the night-time show. The Disney Village shops have their own opening hours, usually later into the evening. The exact times are in the Disneyland Paris app.

04 Can you order Disneyland Paris merchandise online?

There’s no official Disneyland Paris online shop. To buy from home, you can go to the Disney Store website (formerly shopDisney), which sells official Disney merchandise and sometimes a few Disneyland Paris-specific products. At the resort, you buy directly in the shops.
