At a glance

Adventureland is one of the five lands of Disneyland Park, opened on 12 April 1992 along with the Disneyland Paris resort (then Euro Disneyland).

The land is split into four distinct themed areas:

The main entrance, Adventureland Bazaar, recreates an Eastern town inspired by the tales of the One Thousand and One Nights and the film Aladdin, released in 1992. The Imagineers designed this area while the film was being made.

A second area with a mainly African feel is mostly home to shops and restaurants.

The third evokes the jungles of Asia and is home to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril.

The last and largest area recreates the Caribbean, with Pirates of the Caribbean and Adventure Isle, an artificial island in the centre.

The Paris climate forced the Imagineers to drop Jungle Cruise, found in every other Adventureland in the world, as the animatronics couldn’t cope with harsh winters.

The main attractions are Pirates of the Caribbean (1992), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril (30 July 1993, the first Disney ride with a 360° loop, sponsored by Esso until 2017), Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin (9 December 1993), Adventure Isle with Skull Rock inspired by Peter Pan, La Cabane des Robinson based on Swiss Family Robinson and the network of caves.

Pirates’ Beach is a play area for kids.

The standout restaurants are Captain Jack’s - Restaurant des Pirates (formerly Blue Lagoon, built into the Pirates of the Caribbean ride), Colonel Hathi’s Pizza Outpost (formerly Explorers Club Restaurant), Agrabah Café (opened in 1999 in place of the covered Eastern market) and Hakuna Matata, inspired by The Lion King.

The main shops are Les Trésors de Schéhérazade, La Girafe Curieuse, Le Coffre du Capitaine and Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost.

Several design details are worth spotting: a gold chandelier given by King Hassan II of Morocco hangs in the entrance passage, a golden egg referring to the Roc bird from Sinbad’s adventures tops the east tower, the initials WDI (Walt Disney Imagineering) are carved into the mosaic archway and the Indiana Jones temple draws on the Pallava architecture of southern India.

The land is a journey of exploration through the wild and exotic corners of the world. You pass through several smaller worlds: the pirate Caribbean and its taverns, the African jungle where the Robinson family was shipwrecked, the Eastern desert of Agrabah and the archaeological temple where Indiana Jones hunts for his relics.

The common thread is a nineteenth-century explorer’s great travel journal: each corner of the land tells the story of a different expedition, and anyone who ventures in discovers a consistent world of waterfalls, rope bridges and ruins.

What makes it stand out

The ultimate land for exploring, with an island you can walk around and secret caves. Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, La Cabane des Robinson and Adventure Isle make up a world of tropical and pirate adventures. A jungle setting that really takes you away, with waterfalls, vines and rope bridges.

Where the inspiration comes from

The land is inspired by Adventureland at Disneyland in Anaheim (1955) and the one at Magic Kingdom in Orlando (1971). The Paris version stands out for its Adventure Isle, which you can explore on foot, and its Pirates of the Caribbean (the longest version in the world), both only found at Disneyland Paris.

My verdict

Julie ★★★½☆ 200+ visits since 2023

Adventureland is a great land, and yet it’s the one I visit the least: a real paradox. What I love is its atmosphere: you go from the Middle East to the Caribbean in a few steps, and every corner has its own mood.

I’ve lost count of the photos taken in front of the skull-shaped rock, the Pirates of the Caribbean fort, the galleon or Indiana Jones’s lost temple. But what I love most of all is how endlessly explorable it is: I’ve wandered through the caves more times than I can say, and I can still get lost in there and lose all my bearings.

My best memory: the actors hidden in the caves during a Halloween party! Amazing thrills and memories with my little sister.

I also love the small recent additions like the treasure hunt: a nice way to take a breather during the day, and always fun to share with my friends and family.

The land is between Fantasyland and Frontierland. You reach it from Central Plaza through the walkway to the left of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Your questions about this land

01 What are the lands of Disneyland Park and how many attractions are in each?

Disneyland Park is split into 5 themed lands. Main Street U.S.A. has 5 experiences, including rides in period vehicles and the covered arcades. Adventureland has 7 attractions, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, La Cabane des Robinson and Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin. Discoveryland lines up 6 futuristic attractions such as Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain, Star Tours and Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast. Fantasyland has the most, with 13 attractions inspired by fairy tales, including Sleeping Beauty Castle and La Tanière du Dragon. Frontierland offers 6 Wild West attractions, including Big Thunder Mountain and Phantom Manor.

02 Which iconic attractions are not to be missed at Disneyland Park?

For a first visit to Disneyland Park, I strongly recommend a handful of essentials. Big Thunder Mountain is the most popular ride in the park, with thrills the whole family can enjoy. Phantom Manor is still something special, with a really well-crafted atmosphere. Pirates of the Caribbean is an immersive boat ride that kids and grown-ups love. Peter Pan’s Flight, although it’s short, is an iconic ride that is always in demand. Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is the park’s big thrill ride. And don’t forget Sleeping Beauty Castle, which rises to 50 metres and remains the symbol of Disneyland Paris.

03 How can you avoid long queues for the most popular rides?

To avoid long queues at Disneyland Paris, I combine several tactics. First, Single Rider is free and really speeds things up on the rides that offer it, including Crush’s Coaster, Flight Force, Ratatouille and Spider-Man, as long as you’re happy not to ride with your group. Next, Disney Premier Access is a paid service that gives you priority access to the headline rides. If you’re staying in a Disney hotel, Extra Magic Time lets you into the park before official opening, and it’s the best time to ride the popular attractions back to back without queuing. Finally, heading to the most popular rides during a parade or a big show empties the queues considerably.
