At a glance

The Pirate Galleon is directly inspired by Captain Hook’s Galley, which stood in Fantasyland at Disneyland in California from 1960 to 1982 and was itself based on the Jolly Roger, Captain Hook’s galleon in Peter Pan (1953). Designed under the direction of Imagineer Chris Tietz, this imposing ship is anchored in Cannonball Cove, right at the foot of Skull Rock.

This replica of a seventeenth-century galleon is reached by a small suspension bridge and lets you explore the main deck, the ship’s wheel in the wheelhouse, the starboard cannons and various corners of the crew quarters. Kids can play pirates, take the helm, fire at imaginary enemies and climb from one deck to another.

It’s one of the most iconic photo spots in Adventureland, and particularly spectacular at sunset when its silhouette stands out against Skull Rock. Its soundtrack blends into that of Adventure Isle, which is now made up of tunes from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and traditional sea shanties.

What makes it stand out

The pirate ship you explore at your own pace. A life-size galleon moored in the lagoon, with a deck, cabins and cannons for kids to roam as they please. A lovely view over the treasure island of Adventure Isle and its waterfalls. Free access with no queue, ideal for slowing down during a busy day.

History

Opened on 12 April 1992 along with the park, the Pirate Galleon is an original part of the exploration area designed by Tony Baxter’s teams, with no direct equivalent in the other Disney parks. The restaurant it housed, Captain Hook’s Galley, closed during the 2011 refurbishment, and its outdoor terrace had already become the Pirates’ Beach play area in 1999.

Adventure Isle was refurbished in 2016, but the galleon is still waiting for its next restoration. It is closed for a long-term refurbishment, with no reopening date announced by Disneyland Paris.

My verdict

The Pirate Galleon is a life-size replica of Captain Hook’s ship, moored in the Adventure Isle lagoon. You climb aboard freely to wander the deck and the cabins and squeeze between the cannons. It’s a walk-through that opened with the park, in the same vein as Captain Hook’s Galley at Disneyland in California.

I really loved it as a signature photo spot and a quick stop for kids. Watch out: as I write this, the attraction is closed for a long-term refurbishment and Disneyland Paris hasn’t announced a reopening date. If it has reopened by the time you visit, make the most of it, as it’s one of the best-preserved relics of the original Adventureland.

The Pirate Galleon is in Adventureland, in the middle of Adventure Isle and right next to Pirates’ Beach.

Your questions about this ride

01 How can you avoid long queues for the most popular rides?

To avoid long queues at Disneyland Paris, I combine several tactics. First, Single Rider is free and really speeds things up on the rides that offer it, including Crush’s Coaster, Flight Force, Ratatouille and Spider-Man, as long as you’re happy not to ride with your group. Next, Disney Premier Access is a paid service that gives you priority access to the headline rides. If you’re staying in a Disney hotel, Extra Magic Time lets you into the park before official opening, and it’s the best time to ride the popular attractions back to back without queuing. Finally, heading to the most popular rides during a parade or a big show empties the queues considerably.

02 Are the queue times shown in the park reliable?

Yes, the queue times shown in the app or on the screens around the park are generally reliable. They’re often the same as, or slightly longer than, the real wait, which helps you plan your day better.

03 How can I find out if a ride will be closed for refurbishment during my trip?

Disneyland Paris publishes the list of rides closed for refurbishment on its official website, several weeks in advance. Because the parks are open all year round, the maintenance teams sometimes work on days when the parks are open, which leads to temporary closures. My advice: check this calendar (or the one on my blog) before booking, especially if there’s one particular ride you really care about.

04 Which rides might scare young children?

Several rides at Disneyland Paris can frighten young children even without a height restriction. Blanche-Neige et les Sept Nains, in Fantasyland, has dark scenes with the witch that can catch them off guard. Les Voyages de Pinocchio also has some unsettling scenes. La Tanière du Dragon, under Sleeping Beauty Castle, is home to a very impressive animatronic dragon. Phantom Manor, in Frontierland, plays on a ghostly atmosphere and is really intense for toddlers. Pirates of the Caribbean switches between cheerful moments and darker scenes. I’d suggest watching how your child reacts before you get on.

05 How far in advance does Disneyland Paris announce ride closures?

Disneyland Paris publishes the list of ride closures around 2 to 3 months in advance. For major rides, the park tells visitors about planned construction work at least two months before it starts. I recommend checking the official calendar (or my dedicated page) a few weeks before your visit, as dates can change. That way you avoid the nasty surprise of finding out on the day that your favourite ride is being refurbished.
